
Buzz Aldrin Receives annual ICON Award

June 8 th , 2003 Los Angeles --The UCLA Center on Aging has honored Buzz Aldrin as the recipient of its annual ICON Award. The award was presented to Buzz by longtime friend and Academy Award winning director James Cameron in honor of Dr. Aldrin’s contributions to society throughout his life. In his presentation speech, Cameron gave a vibrant recollection of the historic Apollo 11 moon landing. He went on to praise Buzz’ tenacity and vision for space exploration: “Buzz has worked tirelessly for the last two decades, lobbying with the public and the aerospace industry to turn things around, to get us pointed back in the right direction…He is a true warrior, even now still helping blaze a path to the stars.” Upon accepting the award, Buzz recalled the words of an anonymous writer, “Nobody grows old merely by living a number of years. People grow old only by deserting their ideals…” Buzz and Mr. Cameron share a deep interest in human space travel and deep-sea exploration. The acclaimed director has just released the IMAX Ghosts of the Abyss , a documentary expedition of the Titanic, and has been a vocal advocate for continued space exploration. Dr. Aldrin was a member of the second expedition team to achieve a successful landing on the Titanic. The June 7 th event was held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and also honored Dr. Jerome Tamkin.
